My All Natural Weekly Beauty Regimen for a Spa Day at Home

image

So between work, the house, and the daily fight of finding what makes me happy in life, my skin suffers. I’m always on the search beauty remedies and tips that will help me lay off the countless coats of face paint needed to help me look fresh and rested.

In this post, I’m going to give you a few beauty regimens that you can make at home with whatever ingredients you have laying around at home.

1. Sugar Scrub

Everyone should have a good scrub recipe in their repertoire and this one is the only thing you should ever be using sugar forJ

Mix a handful of sugar with a few drops of olive oil and rose water and use to scrub your entire body in circular motions to get your circulation flowing, and slough off any dead skin. Your entire body will feel softer than a baby’s bottom…okay bad analogy.

2. Coffee Scrub

This scrub is a no brainer. It takes one ingredient…one…just one, but the outcome is miraculous. All you need is the leftover coffee grinds from the coffee you made this morning! Scrub your body right after a shower in circular motions and LEAVE ON for a few minutes—the caffeine in the coffee will help tighten your skin temporarily flattening out any cellulite issues you may have on your thighs or butt area. You are welcome!

3. Tea Spray Tanner

So we all want that dewy summery tanned glow all the time minus the harmful sun rays, am I right? Well here’s a natural spray tan using…waitforit…TEA! Yes! Regular old tea that you probably have lying in your cupboard right now! Grab yourself 5 bags of tea and put to steep in 1 liter of boiling purified water. Let the tea steep for about 25 minutes. Now once it’s completely cooled, pour it into a spray bottle and spritz your whole body adding as many layers as you can to darken the color. It works like magic giving you a beautiful bronze color while also giving you skin that glows! You’ll be hooked after trying it once, I promise.

What I usually like to do is take a shower and exfoliate my body twice a week, slather on some coconut oil for moisturization, and spray some tea on myself.

Let me know if you give it a try! I would love to know what you think!

The Wondrous Health Benefits of Baking Soda, Coconut Oil, and Apple Cider Vinegar!

image

Baking soda, coconut oil, and apple cider vinegar—three things that I’d be lost in life without.  The possibilities are truly endless, I swear I think I use all three of them for everything from beauty regimens, to household cleaning products.

I like to use baking soda, apple cider vinegar, and coconut oil for:

1. Deodorant:

After finding out how much the aluminum in deodorants contribute to breast cancer in females, I’ve been determined to find an all-natural deodorant, as of yet, I am yet to find one I’m happy with so I decided to go online and make my own. I’ve been using this recipe for months now and it works like a charm.

Mix ¼ cup of virgin coconut oil with 2 tablespoons of baking soda and 2 tablespoons of corn starch. Mix well and refrigerate. You could either put in an empty deodorant bar, or you could save it in a closed jar. All you have to do is take a little amount in your hands and rub it into your underarms. I’d advise you do this right before you start on your makeup and let it absorb before you get dressed. Also, try to shave the night before as it may sting a bit.

2. Exfoliator:

Baking soda can be an amazing exfoliator that could really help in drying out pimples, getting rid of stubborn blackheads, and sloughing off dead skin cells on the face (or any other problematic areas).

I usually just mix a tablespoon of baking soda with a few drops of water and gently scrub my skin. Or I just dab the paste on the blackhead/pimple and leave it for 15 minutes, wash it off and voila..life is good again!

If your face is looking tired and you feel your skin needs a pick-me-up before applying your makeup, mix some of the leftover coffee grinds from your coffee maker with a teaspoon of baking soda and give your face a little scrub, leaving the scrub on your face for 5 minutes, wash off, and then moisturize as usual. Your face will feel super soft. The caffeine in the coffee will help promote circulation, and bring color back to your face.

3. Shampoo:

I’ve heard of so many people using the no-poo approach when it comes to their hair (using baking soda instead of shampoo), as much as I would love to jump on that wagon, my hair has been chemically processed badly in the past (I was forced into it for my wedding -.-). So I think using baking soda and apple cider vinegar 4 times a week may be a bit too harsh on my hair right now; so for now, I’ll just settle on using it to clarify my scalp once a week.

Clarifying your scalp means that you get rid of any excess oils and hair products which bring back body and shine to your hair and promotes circulation in your scalp, which also promotes hair growth. Did someone say triple whammy?!

I wet my hair thoroughly with cold water, mix ¼ cup of baking soda with double that amount of water and pour and gently massage into my scalp (only into my scalp). I then wash it off with cold water and add an apple cider vinegar mixture (1/4 apple cider vinegar to double that in water) to my hair especially to the ends and leave in my hair for 3 minutes—the apple cider vinegar, believe it or not, acts as a conditioner for the hair.

After that, rinse your hair with cold water really well. Don’t worry there should be no smell of the vinegar. Once you apply a leave-in conditioner (I like to use R&B from Lush), dry your hair, and style it as usual you will be amazed with your hair. I promise.

4. Toothpaste:

Since I’ve had such a hard time finding natural toothpastes that don’t have fluoride in them, I’ve had to resort to making my own at home. As soon as I wake up I usually oil pull with coconut oil (swish it in my mouth for 15 minutes to get rid of any nasty-ass bacteria) and then follow with my homemade toothpaste. Just mix some coconut oil with baking soda and brush—it’ll whiten your teeth, get rid of any bacteria and smell.

5. Mouthwash:

Since most store-bought mouthwashes contain alcohol and fluoride I’ve decided to gargle the old fashioned way using a glass filled with warm water, sea salt, and baking soda. And guess what…my gums don’t bleed when I brush anymore! Yay!

6. In the kitchen:

Baking soda has a million and one uses in the kitchen. I use it to help get rid of stubborn grease stains by mixing some with water and making into a paste I just spread it over stains on metal that I want to get rid of—dirty pots, the inside of the oven, stove tops—and leave them to set for a few hours or overnight. Then, all I have to do is wipe it clean the next day and I’m good to go.

7. Bad smells:

If you’ve got food stuck in your drain, or funky smells coming out of there you could use it as a natural drain cleaner that won’t harm the environment. Just pour ½ cup of baking soda down the drain and follow it with 1 cup of apple cider vinegar. Then a half hour later follow it with hot water. The reaction from the baking soda mixing with the vinegar will push down anything that could possibly be stuck (remember those volcanoes we used to make for science projects in school?).

Also, if you have a problem with the garbage cabinet or the fridge having a bad smell, just keep a can of baking soda open in there and it will suck up all the smell! No joke!

I’m sure many of you have about a gazillion other uses for baking soda and apple cider vinegar, I would love to hear them!

Easy and Healthy Salmon Teriyaki Dinner

In a previous post I had talked about the wonderland that is the Jumeirah fish market in Dubai. If you didn’t get to read it click here http://tinyurl.com/jumeirahfishmarket

This post is going to be about how I got those fishies to sing “under da sea” in my belly. Here’s a quick and easy salmon recipe.

I made teriyaki salmon with a simple yet healthy soba-noodle salad and it was mighty fine if I do say so myself. It’s an easy and healthy dinner/lunch recipe to have in your culinary repertoire.

image

Ingredients:

-          Salmon fillet

-          Soba noodles

-          Bell peppers

-          Fresh ginger

-          A handful of cashews

-          Coriander

-          Soy sauce

-          Chili flakes

-          Spring onions

-          Garlic

-          Sesame seeds

-          Honey

-          Sesame oil

So first things first, you need to get the salmon in a marinade and let it soak up all those flavors for at least 30 minutes before cooking. The longer the better.

-          For the marinade, grab a Ziploc baggie, and pour in ¼ cup of soy sauce, a swig of honey, a pinch of chili flakes, some grated ginger and a grated clove of garlic and just let those babies dye themselves  in the soy sauce.

-          As for the soba noodle salad, I promise you it could not be easier. Soba noodles need exactly 6-7 minutes to cook so if you’re a slow chopper, I suggest you cut everything up before you put the noodles to cook.

-          Slice the garlic, spring onions, ginger, and bell peppers as finely as you possible can. (If you’ve got any other veggies on hand and would like to add them…why the heck not? You could add broccoli, zuchinni..basically any thing you want.)

-          Boil the noodles and after they are cooked drain them and wash with cold water.

-          Get started on the salmon, just braising it by searing it on a high heat on both sides and then pouring the marinade liquid to let boil gently until just flaky and cooked.

-          On a high heat (and preferably in a wok pan) pour some sesame oil and cook the bell peppers for 1 minute; then, add the ginger and garlic and noodles. Flip a few times, then add some soy sauce and toss a few more times. Then turn off the heat, and sprinkle sesame seeds, spring onions, and coriander and you are in business.

-          You could serve in a giant romaine lettuce leaf and top with toasted cashews and salmon fillet. Voila

These quick and easy salmon or seafood recipes are really good to have on you if you’re swamped and hungry—so you have a quick lunch or dinner to put together!

Healthy and Easy Lentil Soup recipe This baby is a recipe I got from my wonderful mother. It’s her faux creamy orange lentil soup with veg. It is a winner, I promise! Back at home we used to usually have this soup during the cold winter months, or during Ramadan for extra nourishment—protein and hydration. It’s an easy and quick vegetarian recipe to use when you just can’t be bothered to cook a decent meal—a bit of this soup and you’re warm, full, and fuzzy inside. It’s a good option for a healthy and quick lunch or/and dinner. Ingredients: 1 sliced carrot 1 chopped green pepper 2 cloves of garlic 1 medium sized onion 3/4 of a mug of orange lentil 1/4 of a mug of basmati rice a pinch of cumin 1 cube of chicken stock 1 lemon olive oil coriander salt & pepper 1 ltr of boiling water Method: First, chop the onions and carrots and saute until tender in a deep pot. While the veggies tender, measure your lentils and rice in a mug and wash until the water runs clear (getting rid of any excess starch or muck). To the onions and carrots add the garlic, green pepper, stock cube, and coriander and cook on a medium-low heat. Once the cumin has been toasted, add 1 liter of boiling water and add rice and lentils. Bring to a boil, cover and let simmer for 20-25 minutes or until carrots are tender. Add salt and pepper to taste. Serve with ripped coriander, a drizzle of olive oil, and lemon. You can never go wrong with my Puerto Rican mother’s version of a Palestinian classic ‘Shorbit Adas’.
