The plastic band. The digital numbers.
‘Quartz’ was the buzzword.
Still don’t honestly know what that means
But it sounds good. Doesn’t it?
Size matters. The bigger the strap,
The richer your parents.
And the more likely you were
To have kick-ass birthday parties
Where mates got going-home presents
They’d actually keep.
The fact that, after 20 years or so,
They’ve become trendy again
Thanks to today’s retro-obsessives
And patent lack of originality.
7 o’clock in the evening. A Bangladeshi girl.
God knows how long it took her
To save up for that lovely dress.
Asks a passerby to take a picture.
In the prime of her life.
Standing by the Dubai Metro Station.
